Pumpkins on Pinterest: Might Bite

Cure for Count Choculitus

General Mills Monster Cereals hit stores as early as August, but when Count Chocula disappears from shelves it is a sure sign Halloween is here! Always the first to be out of stock, this chocolaty marshmallow cereal is the top favorite of the monster mix. With the re-introduction of Fruit Brute and Yummy Mummy this year, there are even more ways to mix up this recipe.

Monster Marshmallow Treats
 Ingredients:
½ stick of butter
1 bag of mini marshmallows
1 box General Mills Monster Cereal
Directions:
Melt butter on low. Once melted add marshmallows and stir over medium heat until smooth. Don't try to crank the heat to hurry it up, it will burn it up!!!  Add cereal and get mixing! Making sure the mixture is evenly distributed (holding everything together), turn of heat and pour into a brownie pan. Add sprinkles, candies, etc while treats are still sticky. Cover for a few hours to firm then cut into squares.

Pumpkins on Pinterest: Veggie Monsters

Quick & Cozy Pumpkin Oatmeal

The mornings are getting chillier with the seemingly sudden arrival of the season. Autumn however, no matter the weather, remains to be a warm and cozy time of year. Sweaters in deep jewel tones are hitting stores, green leaves are turning luminous gold hues, and we find ourselves digging out soft flannel bed sheets to curl up in during the crisp Fall nights. These creature comforts just add to the star of the season: PUMPKIN!!! Practically everything on the menu, from coffee, to baked goods, to beer, has a seasonal squash edition.

One comfort food my boys love is instant oatmeal. A healthy and quick breakfast, a bowl of oatmeal is a warm invitation to the dining table when it is even harder to get out of bed on a chilly day. Just a few dashes of Pumpkin Pie Spice added to the usual oatmeal regimen (I make mine with 1% milk in the microwave) and a garnish of candy corn makes a super simple October treat. And unlike multiple visits to Starbucks for limited edition edibles, this dish won't break the bank at just 38¢ a serving!!!

TUNESDAY: Katy Perry-Roar (LHS Edition)

In an effort to raise funds for Colorado flood victims, Lakewood High School students made this lip dub version of Katy Perry's newest single; Roar. The Tigers, more than 2,000 of them, stomped the LHS campus truly showing their stripes. No class time was used in the one shot production. Students volunteered their time and energy to speak up for a community, a state, in need. In hopes of winning a private concert with Perry, the students would like to sell tickets to the event, moving it to a bigger venue, with proceeds going to Colorado flood relief. Perry has seen the video, loved it, and even gave a shout out to LHS-
"Oh my GAWD. Now this is what I call school SPIRIT! I hear you roaring LAKEWOOD HIGH!" @katyperry

Good Luck Lakewood High School! Colorado is keeping their fingers crossed!!!

TUNESDAY: Kelly Clarkson- Stronger

America's first Idol braved the altitude last night during The Honda Civic Tour at Fiddler's Green. Kelly Clarkson opened her set with Stronger. The set was chock full of hits such as Breakaway, Dark side, and Since You've Been Gone. Clarkson warned her Colorado crowd that she may pass out due to the mile high atmosphere, but no sign of impairment was detected as the songstress amazed with flawless vocals.
Congrats Kelly on your engagement!!!

Duct Tape Laundry Basket

Here is a fun and super easy project that is perfect for personalizing your laundry basket. With a vibrant color basket and so many rolls of tape to choose from, the possibilities are endless! These decorated baskets are great for toy storage too. Dorm dwellers and landromat hoppers won't have any trouble spotting their baskets in the mix! Use zebra tape on a hot pink basket for the diva in your life. Throw tie dye tape on to encourage that one hippie you know to wash his clothes. Fill it with  detergent, dryer sheets, and a pack of hangers for a housewarming gift. Grab a roll of printed duct tape and customize by making a trim around entire rim including handles. DO NOT use on rubber grip handles! Cheap standard baskets work best. Please share your duct tape basket with the blog!

Patriotic Potato Chip Cookies

Since my college days, I have been trying to perfect the recipe for these crowds pleasing cookies. To the eye, they are nothing more than a homemade Rainbow Chip Deluxe, but do not be fooled! The toasty crunchy outside surrounds a moist and fluffy cookie center with a melt in your mouth buttery finish. A favorite with the guys, my Patriotic Potato Chip Cookies are great treat for Father's Day too!

Patriotic Potato Chip Cookies
Makes 2 1⁄2 dozen cookies
Prep: 10 minutes, Bake: 18 minutes, Cool: 15 minutes

1 (18.25-ounce) box white cake mix with pudding
1⁄2 cup butter, softened
2 large eggs
1 tbsp Vanilla extract
1 cup red, & blue M&M’S®
1 overflowing cup potato chips

DIRECTIONS-

1. Preheat oven to 350°. Prepare bake sheets w/ nonstick cooking spray.
2. Mix in a large bowl: cake mix, butter, vanilla, and eggs. Beat at medium speed with an electric mixer for 2 minutes, or until well blended. Stir in candies and potato chips. Try not to crush chips up too much, you want a little crunch!
3. Roll by hand into walnut-size balls, and place 2 inches apart on sheets.
4. Bake for 15 minutes, or until golden brown. Let sit for 2 minutes before moving to wire racks to cool.

Bubble Stumped

Recently I have seen a surge of what bloggers are calling "bubble stations." All over Pinterest are ideas for table set ups with refillable bubble solution for kid's parties. A true fail safe activity, I have yet to meet a kid who doesn't love blowing bubbles
With an old cherry tree stump in the middle backyard, it was hard to divert the kids from the potential hazard. So, with a little help from my Dad, we cut all the limbs to be leveled platforms. Throw in a few lawn decorations and a slew of bubble wands, and viola! The once eyesore stump is now a funky fun backyard attraction!

Green Thumb Jr.

As a kid, I didn't get to participate in a whole lot of gardening. There were tiny seeds, sharp tools, thorny plants, and an overall lack of know how when it came to general yard work. This kept me from really getting involved. I also would get stuck doing the boring jobs like picking up sticks. How my parents still tease me about my disdain for picking up sticks to this day! Overall, one pack of seeds truly sparked my interest in the garden. I saved a pack of radish seeds that I got as a toy in my McDonald's Happy Meal. I didn't tell my parents about them and hid the radish pouch til I got a chance to plant them without my folks noticing! I planted the whole envelope next to the garage in a flower bed. I didn't have any idea what I was doing, and had long forgotten them, but come that fall there was one large red radish in a pansy patch. I was so proud!
Always remembering that one radish I managed to sprout, I want my kids to find that same simple joy. Taking them to the local nursery and letting them pick out things they liked for the garden was a fun adventure. By simply noting a few things my sons are interested in, I was able to make the garden a more inviting and appealing place. My oldest son loves turtles and frogs, which are luckily  commonly found lawn decorations. He likes to find them placed all around the yard and give them each their own silly name.

My husband and I also built a bamboo rod teepee in the garden.  Now there is an invitation for children to explore and play in the garden. Surrounding the bamboo rods are pole bean sprouts and snap peas to climb over the summer. The teepee also features a place for kids to dig with tools and use trucks in the dirt. Yes! That's right, DIRT! Not only does being outdoors have its health benefits, but dirt has been scientifically proven to produce serotonin and help build your immune system. I would always hear as a kid "God made dirt, so dirt don't hurt!" Now I get that.

With more than enough room to plant in the vegetable garden I decided to make small walking paths covered in lawn clippings. This way little feet can be lead through the garden rather than trampling over plants. My youngest seems most taken with the plants and is very curious about the different color petals and blossoms. Come Fall, I think both boys will be thrilled to see big ol' pumpkins and (hopefully) sunflowers towering over head!

The Office Farewell

Grab your tissues! Tonight, 5/16/13, marks the end of The Office's 9 season run. Through all the Michael Scott nonsense, the Jim&Pam romance, Meredith's drinking, Kevin's eating, Stanley's snoring, Angela's cats, Oscar's secrets, Creed's crazy ass, and Dwight's wisdom, it is as if we the viewer were a coworker at Dunder Mifflin that shared a mutual hate for Toby. So celebrate your last day at the office like it's Pretzel Day! Will you go casual Friday while you couch surf, or does this occasion call for a little black tie Dundies style? Either way, saying goodbye to the folks in Scranton, PA. on tonight's 2 hour series finale ensures to be full of laughter and tears. It's going to be hard to let go...that's what she said.

Almost anything from a jar to a crock can make a lovely vase for these spring stems. Here are a few pins for inspiration.

Seize the Grill

Living in Colorado, you have to learn to adapt to the ever changing weather. As part of adapting to the conditions outside, I've learned to also take every opportunity to soak up some sun during the uncertainty of a Colorado spring. With one day sunny and the next a blizzard, my weekly planner is based on whatever the meteoroligist forcasts. So, with a window of sunshine, it was time to seize the grill!

Call it a belated Spring Break, but this no fuss family dinner in the evening sun was like a mini vacation! Steak doesn't have to be a luxury cost when you shop grocery Sunday ads. (Find a real deal & stock up in the deep freeze for up to 1 year.)Paired with some grilled veggies(with olive oil&sea salt) and a side salad, you have a simple dinner off the grill with little prep and less than half the steak house price. I hope to be grilling home grown veggies later this summer, if I could just get the produce section going in the garden...  Stay tuned!

Full Moon of Spring

Take a moment this evening, assuming you have clear skies, and check out the full Moon. A full moon in the month of April is known as a Pink Moon, named after the color of early spring ground cover. This evening will also have a partial lunar eclipse only visible from the Eastern Hemisphere. Farmer's Almanac says this period through the last quarter of the Moon is the best time for killing weeds, thinning, pruning, mowing, cutting timber, and planting below-ground crops. Sounds like good news for green thumbs, if Jack Frost would just get out of town!

Rise up this morning, Smile at the rising sun

Last year I found B is for Bob, a children's album from Tuff Gong. I would recommend this CD to all those who have little ones running around the house. This is a great way to introduce them to worldly music and poetry. All the songs are bright and sunny, even classics like Redemption Song and Jamming have been given a light hearted upgrade for little listeners. If you are a Marley fan, this is a great addition to the catalog with some deeper cuts like Small Axe and High Tide or Low Tide. I like to play B is for Bob while the kiddos eat their breakfast, but it is also a great summertime soundtrack. Going to a child's birthday party? Baby shower? Looking for something for the kids to listen to in the car that doesn't have a cartoon voice singing? You can find it here- http://www.amazon.com/Is-Bob-Eco-Marley-Wailers/dp/B001QAZARG

Earth Day Inspires Growth

While Spring is definitely in full swing, the weather here in Colorado is anything but sunshine and bumblebees. After spending the first weeks of the season doing some much needed indoor Spring cleaning, I have cabin fever. To keep my madness at bay, I have been dreaming up my gardening plans. Lots of inspiration to be found on Pinterest, here are just a few ideas I'd like to try and tackle.
